It was understood that Edurne, a Spanish singer who represented her country at the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year, was one of the driving forces behind De Gea’s desire to move back to Madrid this summer.
The 24-year-old looked set to join Real Madrid, but his proposed transfer to the Bernabeu failed to materialise after documentation was submitted after the Spanish transfer window closed.
De Gea was subsequently expected to leave Manchester United on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign, but the Spain international has performed a dramatic U-turn by putting pen-to-paper on a new deal with the Red Devils.
He tweeted: "I feel proud to announce that I'll continue with you and @ManUtd. Thanks for your unconditional support!"
Louis van Gaal confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon that De Gea could start against Liverpool on Saturday.
De Gea expected to start v Liverpool
The world-class shot-stopper played his first competitive match of the 2015-16 campaign for Spain against Macedonia earlier this week - and now appears to be both physically and mentally ready to play for the Red Devils for the first time since the end of last season.
Sergio Romero, who filled in for De Gea while the Spaniard’s future was being resolved, was arguably at fault for both of Swansea City’s goals in United’s 2-1 defeat at the Liberty Stadium before the international break and is likely to find himself on the bench against Brendan Rodgers’ men this weekend.
