Manchester United fans have urged Bastian Schweinsteiger to convince his former teammate Thomas Muller to leave Bayern Munich for Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger received a host of tweets - see for yourself by scrolling a little further down this page - from optimistic United supporters after wishing his fellow Germany international a happy birthday.

Manchester United were linked with Muller throughout the summer, so the sight of Schweinsteiger messaging the World Cup winner was bound to excite certain members of the Red Devils’ faithful.

“Happy Birthday and all the best, my friend!” Schweinsteiger tweeted. “Enjoy your day. 😉 @esmuellert_”

In fairness to the Manchester United supporters who reacted to Schweinsteiger’s tweet with excitement, the Red Devils were linked with Muller again this weekend after Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted Bundesliga clubs will soon struggle to compete with Premier League clubs due to the incredible amount of money in English football.

United made bid for Muller this summer

However, Muller is one of Bayern Munich’s key players, and the German champions have no desire to sell the 26-year-old who has scored six goals in five appearances so far this season.

In order to stand any chance of signing Muller, Manchester United would need to tempt Bayern with an astronomical bid - one that would surely break the British transfer record.

It was reported in July - by German newspaper Bild - that United had submitted a €100 million (£70 million) bid for Muller, but even that was turned down by officials at the Allianz Arena.
