Manchester United attempted to sign Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller for a world-record €120 million this past summer, according to German publication Kicker.
The report claims that the Red Devils were ready to offer the forward as much as €12.5m-per-year to sign on at Old Trafford until 2020.
The 26-year-old is recognised as one of the leading attackers in world football, but Manchester United failed to secure his signature throughout the course of the transfer window.

Louis van Gaal and Co., of course, secured the signing of Muller's former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, but were unable to persuade Bayern to sell their top-class striker.
Despite failing to land Muller, the Red Devils managed to sign highly-rated Frenchman Anthony Martial, who found the back of the net against Liverpool on his debut for the club this past weekend.
Muller the dream
Let's be honest, the signing of Muller really would have been a dream for the Red Devils in their pursuit of success under the Van Gaal regime. Ultimately, the German international is one of the classiest strikers in the game, and would have only improved the Red Devils as an attacking force.
United, despite Martial's impressive debut, are clearly lacking up top. Of course, after Wayne Rooney missed this past weekend's outing, United fans had to watch on as Belgian international Marouane Fellaini failed to produce the goods up front.
There's no doubt about it, Fellaini gives the Red Devils another option, but he's not quite good enough to help the club return to the summit of the Premier League table. The signing of Muller really could have changed the dynamics of this season's title race.
