Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure claims Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is one of the best five players in world football.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, during an interview with BT Sport, Toure placed the England international at No.5 on his list of the world's best players.

The Manchester City ace, who endured a tricky time as the Citizens were beaten at the hands of Italian giants Juventus in the Champions League last night, selected Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi as the greatest player on the planet.

The Ivorian star placed the world-class trio of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Aguero and Gareth Bale at numbers two, three and four, respectively.

One thing is for sure, the duo of Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney were missed on the pitch last night. Rooney failed to recover in time for the Red Devils' Champions League clash with PSV, while Aguero only managed seven minutes of football in City's home game with Juventus.

Both Manchester teams went down by two goals to one, so will be hoping to bounce back on the domestic scene this weekend.

Rooney struggles

Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping that Wayne Rooney is declared fit for the club's showdown with Southampton. Despite his early season struggles, the England international remains United's best forward, and the Red Devils need him to hit top form in their pursuit of success.

It's not going to be easy for United to challenge City at the summit of the Premier League table this season, but Rooney could yet have a key role to play throughout the proceedings.
