Football News

The annual Night of Champions pay-per-view takes place this weekend at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas where every single championship will be defended.

Many great matches are set to take place at the event. All eyes will be on Seth Rollins as he pulls double duty against both John Cena and The Vigilante, Sting.

Can Rollins walk out with both of his championships? Or will Sting or Cena manage to snatch a championship away from The Architect? Only time will tell.

For now, here are our predictions for the event.

This could be a very entertaining bout to kick off the evening. We have the high-flying trio if Neville and The Lucha Dragons coming up against the brute strength of The Ascension

Stardust and The Ascension aren’t superstars you would think could join forced, but the formation of The Cosmic Wasteland has been fantastic. I do feel Konnor and Viktor could learn a lot by teaming with Stardust, who has excelled on the main roster under every gimmick he’s worked in.

I do think this match could have had a better build, but the fact we’re seeing them all on the card is a treat in itself. I wouldn’t like to see Stardust lose in two pay-per-view matches in a row, but if The Ascension picked up a pay-per-view win, it could be huge for them as well. I am going with Stardust and The Ascension to pick up the victory.

Fellow WWE Lead Writer, Phillipa Hopwood shares a similar view: This feud has been building for so long. I have no idea why The Ascension were coupled with Stardust, but I have fallen in love with The Cosmic Wasteland. I have a feeling The Ascension could finally be set for the push they deserved months ago.

The Lucha Dragons are already on point. Themselves and Neville have been doing some great things on the main roster since their promotion, so it is hard to pick a winner here, I feel like Stardust and The Ascension might just steal one.

Possibly the most pointless match on the card, I highly doubt fans are looking forward to seeing this one. There’s simply been too much focus on Summer and Lana and not enough on Dolph and Rusev.

I really don’t like seeing Rusev in a feud like this, although he’s doing great with what he’s been given. The quicker this feud and match finishes, the better. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this feud continue a little while longer, and there’s also the possibility of a double turn that would see Rusev and Lana reunite. For now, I am hoping Rusev defeats Ziggler.

Phillipa: Does anyone care about this rivalry anymore? What is the point of it? Lana is out injured so she can’t compete for around four months, and Summer is nowhere near strong enough to run this feud alone.

Dolph and Rusev have forgotten why they hate each other and is Summer really worth fighting for? I think Rusev will win the one, and hopefully that's the end of it.

If Nikki gets disqualified or counted out, she loses the title. That’s an interesting twist especially when you consider a member of Team PCB could have potentially turned heel by attacking Nikki to cost Charlotte the championship.

A heel turn is a possibility, but the thing we’re all hoping for the most is a fantastic match. The crowd will play a big part and let’s hope they give the match a chance. If the match is good, then we can argue which decisions were good and which were bad.

We’re going to be talking about the events from Raw for a while, but to focus on Night of Champions I can see a heel turn from Team PCB. Whether it takes place during the match or after the match remains to be seen. I’m going with Charlotte to become the new champion.

Phillipa: So the deck is stacked against Nikki which makes it pretty obvious that she is walking out Divas Champion.

A really cool twist would be if her team turned on her, or someone else came out and attacked Charlotte to give Nikki the DQ win and the Championship. I think it is likely that Nikki will retain the championship now and continue the "revolution" she thinks she is spearheading.

This is one of the matches I’m most looking forward to, mainly because right now the New Day are the best thing in the WWE. Their success and entertainment got Triple H dancing, that alone speaks volumes.

I hope the match is to a high standard, what will be significant is how entertaining Xavier Woods is on the outside, and I do think he’ll play a role in the outcome. I think in booking terms, it’s better for the New Day to retain while fans will hope to see a legendary team capture championship they helped make famous.

I don’t think this will be the end either, so for me New Day retain their championships.

Phillipa: I don't think The Dudley Boys deserve to be in a match for the titles. My only hope is that if they do win them, they end up dropping them to one of the NXT Tag Teams that deserve the spot on the main roster over them.

For me, The New Day are just about the best thing in WWE right now and to take the titles from them would be a complete travesty. For that reason, I am saying New Day retain.

It seems like this match came from out of nowhere, but it’s great for both men to compete in a championship match on a pay-per-view. Owens deserves this and Ryback needs another credible opponent, this makes it a tough match to call.

I would like to see Ryback retain the championship and showcase what he’s capable of as a champion in a lengthy run. I would also like to see Owens win a championship on the main roster. Owens is somebody who can ruin Ryback’s plans right away, and I do think they will clash again. At Night of Champions, Ryback retains.

Phillipa: I actually can't wait for this match. Kevin Owens has performed out of his skin since he debuted on the main roster, and I think he will only continue to do this on Sunday. Ryback is another guy who for me has been doing great things since his return from the Staph Infection.

I think this has the potential to be a match of the night candidate, but I believe Ryback will retain to prolong the feud.

Very unusual to not see this in the main event, but it’s something the fans are looking forward to regardless. Sting in a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match is a massive occasion in itself.

One day I would like to see the record books say Sting held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but it shouldn’t be this Sunday. Rollins is doing great things as the champion, and he could have a really lengthy run if the WWE allow him too. We know a feud with Triple H is also on the horizon, but I do believe Seth Rollins will retain his title.

Phillipa: The fact that WWE have said that this will not be the main event of the pay-per-view I think has given a lot away. I think Seth Rollins will retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Sting because Sting doesn't need the extra dates and hours that come with being the champion.

I think WWE want Seth Rollins to prove that he is worthy of the World Championship. That is why Seth Rollins will win this one and look to go into the main event of the night and retain both of his titles.

Who is the mystery partner? That’s the question everybody is asking. A lot of names have been thrown around as to who it could be, my guess it will end up being an underwhelming choice such as Erick Rowan. Or a huge surprise maybe in the form of an NXT superstar – my pick is Samoa Joe.

I don’t know whether this will mark the end of their feud. I do believe Wyatt and Reigns have done fantastic in this feud, and they’ve helped one another. I do think it wouldn’t look good for Strowman to enter on a losing note, so for me The Wyatt Family win this match.

Phillipa: Is it weird that I am most excited about who the partner could be than the actual match? I mean so many names have floated around, Erick Rowan, Baron Corbin, Finn Balor, The Rock.

So many names that could join these guys and I hope it's Finn Balor. If the match were to end the way it is expected, and Roman then turns heel on Dean, that means The Wyatt Family will probably be the ones to come out on top here. This would further prove that Braun Strowman is a force to be reckoned with.

This will be the match of the night for sure. Cena now has a habit of putting on great matches with the best athletes in the business, and they don’t come better than Seth Rollins.

We know this feud will continue a little longer, so it’s not easy to call this match down the middle. I believe Seth Rollins will retain the United States Championship against Cena this time, but there’s also the chance that Sheamus decided to cash in after this match. So while Rollins may retain the United States Championship, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll walk out with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

I believe Sheamus will cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase.

Phillipa: This is how you give prestige to a mid-card championship, give it the main event of the pay-per-view where all the titles are on the line. Much like SummerSlam last month I fully expect John Cena and Seth Rollins to perform out of their skin here, and I fully expect Seth Rollins to walk out with the United States Championship.

I don't think WWE would give him the title just to give it straight back, and this makes sense as to why their rivalry will continue throughout the year. This will be Seth Rollins night where he proves himself. I don't think Sheamus will cash in after the Sting match either so Seth Rollins will leave with both his titles.
