Chelsea manager Avram Grant hailed captain John Terry as "very special" after the England international defied a facial injury to help the Blues to a memorable Champions League success over Valencia.

The centre-back took to the field at the Mestalla wearing a protective face mask after an operation to for a broken cheekbone, and played the whole match as Chelsea shrugged off their recent indifferent form to claim an impressive 2-1 victory.

When asked for his thoughts behind selecting Terry for the match, Grant said: "For me it was an easy decision to take. When you see John Terry you see a player who plays with all his heart, I don´t know how many players can play with this injury but John Terry´s very special."
