Manchester United fans plead with Javier Hernandez to come back on Twitter

Manchester United fans on Twitter have pleaded with Javier Hernandez to come back to Old Trafford after the Mexico international posted a photo of himself celebrating his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen.

Hernandez scored Leverkusen’s third goal in the 4-1 win over BATE Borisov on Wednesday night - and celebrated a day later by posting a photo on Twitter, alongside the caption: “Very happy with yesterday's team performance and result! Looking forward! # blessed 722 # faithandtrust”.

The final hashtag is particularly interesting. Hernandez has not felt the trust and faith of a manager since playing under Sir Alex Ferguson, who left Old Trafford in 2013. Was this a subtle dig at the likes of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Carlo Ancelotti?

Hernandez was expected to stay at Manchester United, as back-up for Wayne Rooney, following the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao.

However, two bad misses - including one from the penalty spot - against Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off round second leg, effectively ended the Mexican’s career at Manchester United.

He was subsequently sold to Leverkusen for £7.3 million, with United replacing the live-wire striker with Anthony Martial from AS Monaco.

Hernandez has made the right decision

After playing for Manchester United, and on loan at Real Madrid last season, it made sense for Hernandez to join a club of slightly smaller stature.

At Leverkusen, under the management of Roger Schmidt, Hernandez will have the chance to start every week - provided his performances warrant it - in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Manchester United fans react on Twitter

Some Manchester United fans, though, are pining for Chicharito’s return already - and here are some of the best tweets.

Sorry United fans, but Javier Hernandez isn’t coming back.
