Manchester City’s record signing Kevin de Bruyne has revealed that Jose Mourinho only spoke to
him twice while the pair were both at Chelsea for the opening half of the 2013/14 season.
The Belgian was shipped off to Wolfsburg for a fee of £18 million in January 2014 and was subsequently named Footballer of the Year in Germany at the end of last season.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, the playmaker is quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying: “I only talked with him twice, Mourinho.

“That was before the game against Basel, where he said I was doing better, in his opinion, and that
I would get my chance. I think that was maybe November.
“And then one week before January. That’s the day I said I wanted to go because even if I was training better, I wasn’t getting any minutes. So for me personally, it was better to go.”
De Bruyne actually played – and got an assist – in Mourinho’s first competitive game during his
second spell at Chelsea, a 2-0 win over Hull City.
It seems that a relationship between the two never formed though, as the blonde-haired Belgian
found himself settling in Germany just a few months later. He would go on to make just two more appearances for the Blues – and speak to his manager as many times.
Questions have been raised regarding Mourinho’s willingness to let such a high-profile prospect
leave the club at such a young age. Although Manchester City and Wolfsburg fans won’t have any complaints at all.
The 24-year-old has experienced a very successful 18 months since departing Stamford Bridge.
The midfielder contributed an impressive 16 goals and 27 assists in all competitions last term as Wolfsburg finished runners-up in the Bundesliga. And now the Belgium international is looking forward to relaunching his Premier League career with City.
Valued by Manchester City at £58 million, de Bruyne is ready to repay the faith shown in him, adding: “I’m looking forward to making Manchester my new home.
He is set to make his return to west London when Manuel Pellegrini’s side travel to Chelsea in the
Premier League on April 16.
