David Beckham: I wasn't world-class at Manchester United

Football News

David Beckham has revealed that he is not offended by comments made public by Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this week.

The retired manager said he only managed four world-class players in his time at Old Trafford. The players mentioned were Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Eric Cantona.

Beckham not shocked

It isn't surprising that the Scot picked those players, but it came as a bit of a shock to many that he didn't include more in the group.

However, when asked if he was offended, Becks told the BBC that he agreed with Ferguson's view and described the 73-year-old as: "The greatest manager of all time."

Becks the brand

One thing is for sure, though, the former Real Madrid and LA Galaxy player made an absolutely huge impact on football as a sport. The star became an icon, not just to football fans but also sports fans as a whole.

Along with his fashion and charity interests, the former England captain has a football academy, an MLS franchise based in Miami - due to start competing in the 2016/17 season - and is now a UN ambassador.

Other world-class players

So who else could have expected to be in Sir Alex's world-class list?

It would be hard to argue that goalkeepers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van der Sar weren't in that bracket, whilst many believe that defenders Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Jaap Stam were amongst the very best in their positions.

On top of that, midfielder Roy Keane is considered by the majority of United fans to be one of the best leaders and captains the club has ever had, even if he wasn't the most gifted player in the world.

Deadly due Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke may also have a case and there is no doubt that England's new leading scorer, Wayne Rooney, can be considered a world-class player.

United fans, who do you think could be considered world-class out of the players that played for Ferguson? Let us know in the comments box below.
