Jose Mourinho dropped a couple of Chelsea’s star players for the 2-1 Champions League defeat to FC Porto - but quite how Branislav Ivanovic survived the cull is a mystery.

The 31-year-old has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent players in recent seasons, but it’s been a totally different story in the opening weeks of the current campaign.

Ivanovic was below-par once again against Porto - the Serbia international was skinned in the build-up to both goals Asmir Begovic conceded - while a dismal cross he produced, with 10 minutes left on the clock, just about summed up his current form.

The powerful right-back picked the ball up in acres of space on the right flank and shaped to whip a cross into the penalty area, but instead played the ball straight to an opponent on the edge of the box. (To watch the incident, click the link HERE).

Needless to say, Chelsea fans - already frustrated with their team’s substandard performance - vented their fury on Twitter. Scroll down to see some of the best tweets.

Ivanovic's shocking stats

Squawka then gave Chelsea fans even more of a reason to feel angry with their under-performing full-back, tweeting the defender’s shocking statistics from the match at the Estádio do Dragão.

According to the stats compilers, Ivanovic misplaced 10 passes, won just one of his 10 tackles, and failed to win a single aerial duel or complete a cross.

Furthermore, it took Ivanovic until the 90th minute before finally winning a tackle.

Surely Mourinho should have subbed him off long before the final whistle?
