Bayer succumb to St Pauli

Bayer Leverkusen were the major losers of the first day´s action in the first round of the German Cup as they went down 1-0 to St Pauli.

The Hamburg suburban side have a tradition of giant-killing, most notably beating Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen two years ago, and a late goal from Fabian Boll carried them into the second round.

Bayer were not the only Bundesliga outfit to be knocked out in the first round on Saturday, though while Energie Cottbus eventually succumbed to Rot-Weiss Essen on penalties, while there were scares for Werder Bremen and Stuttgart too.
