Football News

Kevin Durant, despite missing large chunks of the 2014-15 season, remains one of the true elite players in the NBA.

So, with the Oklahoma City Thunder star less than 12 months out from the end of his contract, speculation about his free agency future has understandably started early.

The likes of the Washington Wizards, Durant's home franchise, as well as the New York Knicks and an OKC stay have been touted already. But, according to ESPN sports host Stephen A. Smith it is the famous gold and purple that currently ranks number one in the former MVP's mind.

As reported by Lakers Nation, Smith had his own update on KD's situation:

"Regardless of how senseless it may (sound), in one breath I'm hearing that if Kevin Durant doesn't stay in Oklahoma City, L.A. is his primary objective and landing spot as opposed to South Beach or even his home of Washington, D.C."

Smith, known for his outlandish statements, should always be taken with a pinch of salt. Having said that, talk of a Durant-Lakers link up has been touted previously and the more it gets discussed, the more Lakers fans will start to believe it could happen.

Front of the line?

The L.A. franchise will certainly have the cap space in 2016 to be near the front of the queue when it comes to speaking to the 27-year-old.

However, coming off the back of an offseason of frustration when it came to securing top free agency talent, it remains to be seen whether the famous team can convince a player of Durant's calibre to buy into their long-term plans.

Of course, before any of this plays out, Durant will be hoping to increase his value even further by bouncing back from his injury-hit year.

Reportedly 100-percent healthy heading into OKC training camp, the next few months will certainly be an interesting ride for all those invested in KD.
