Brendan Rodgers blasted for playing Emre Can in defence against FC Sion

Brendan Rodgers does not appear to be a popular figure on Merseyside at the minute.

The Liverpool boss is under considerable pressure after a poor start to the season that has seen the Reds drop points at home to West Ham United and Norwich City.

He could have been forgiven for thinking the Europa League could offer him some respite, however, tonight's 1-1 draw at home to Swiss outfit FC Sion has only added to the pressure building on him.

A draw at home to the fifth-placed side in Switzerland is bad enough but the Northern Irish boss has been criticised once again for his persistence in playing players out of position.

Emre Can, Jordan Ibe and Nathaniel Clyne were all played out of position on a night when Liverpool once again struggled in their own back yard.

The square peg in a round hole that proved to irritate fans most was the decision to play Can in a back three.

There is no doubt the young German is a solid central midfielder and has the potential to develop into a leading player in his position.

But there is no doubt about it, he is not a defender. His performance against Sion was nothing short of awful and that was picked up by Reds' fans.

However, instead of blasting the 21-year-old, they turned their anger on to their under-fire boss.

With Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti being linked with the managerial role at Anfield and the obvious fan unrest, it appears Rodgers is hanging on by a thread.

Here are some tweets from Liverpool fans showing their displeasure at Rodgers' tactical decision.
