Calderon plays waiting game over Pepe

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon admits only time will tell if they have paid over the odds for Porto centre-back Pepe.

Madrid splashed out 30million euros (£20million) on the Brazilian-born 24-year-old, and he will compete with Fabio Cannavaro, Sergio Ramos and fellow new arrival Christoph Metzelder for a starting berth at the Spanish champions next season.

"It was the price which Porto asked for and that price which has been paid," Calderon said. "We must wait to find out if that is expensive or cheap. But two years ago we paid this same amount for Sergio Ramos, after he had played only 14 Primera Liga games in his position, and nobody can say now that he is not one of the best centre-backs in the world."
