The Italian goalkeeper, 33, has been without a club since leaving Serie B side Perugia in the summer and the Blues currently need cover after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out for several months following knee surgery.
Just last week in his press conference Jose Mourinho said his side were not targeting any goalkeeper after reports suggested that Manchester United's Victor Valdes and Porto's Helton were possible targets.

But Mourinho has now changed his mind and decided to act and invited the former AC Milan goalkeeper to train with the Blues.
Speaking to the press, Mourinho said:
“We need a goalkeeper now, not in January.
“Helton has a contract with Porto and would only be available in January. By then, Courtois will be available again.”
Youngsters Jamal Blackman and Mitchell Beeney are currently Begovic's understudies and Amelia would provide much-needed experience. He has 9 caps for the Italian national team and was a member of both the World Cup winning squad in 2006 and the Euro 2008 squad.
He also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games.
His time at AC Milan saw him fall down the pecking order behind Christian Abbiati. He made 41 appearances for the Rossoneri in a four-year spell.
Amelia has also represented fellow Serie A sides Livorno, Palermo and Genoa during his career and made one appearance for amateur side Rocca Priora before moving to Serie B side Perugia earlier this year.
Amelia could go straight into the squad for Chelsea's Premier League game at Stamford Bridge against Southampton on Saturday.
