Manchester United star David de Gea believes Petr Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in world football, despite the Arsenal shot-stopper’s advancing years.

Speaking ahead of this Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash between Arsenal and United at the Emirates Stadium, De Gea says he believes the signing of Cech will only benefit the Gunners as the season progresses.

Cech was rested for the 3-2 defeat against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday night - a decision Arsene Wenger was heavily criticised for - but the experienced former Chelsea star will line up against De Gea and co. in one of the biggest Premier League matches so far this season.

“I think he’s a great keeper, one of the best in the world,” De Gea said of Cech, in an interview brought to our attention by 101 Great Goals. “I think that having him in goal will really help Arsenal a lot. He has so many games under his belt and he’s just a top, top goalkeeper.”

De Gea was then asked whether he thought Wenger was right to rest Cech against the Greek champions in mid-week, to which he replied: “Well, that’s a decision for the coaches. At the end of the day he wants to give them both some playing time, and obviously David Ospina is a good keeper who can also perform well for them.”

Asked if he believed Arsenal’s shock defeat in Europe on Tuesday will affect Arsenal, the Spain international added: “I think this is a totally different competition. Even though they lost at home, on Sunday they’ll be really up for it and will want to give their fans something to cheer about so I think they’ll make it very tough for us.”

Cech boosts Arsenal's chances of beating United

Cech has enjoyed a decent start to his Arsenal career and, despite being 33, is clearly still capable of playing two matches a week - even if Wenger believes otherwise.

Having the Czech Republic international in between the sticks, however, should give Arsenal the confidence to win matches like this Sunday’s.

Anything less than three points and the pressure on Wenger’s shoulders will inevitably intensify.
