Pepe Reina wants the old Liverpool back after Brendan Rodgers is sacked

Pepe Reina doesn’t appear to be particularly upset by the decision of Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group to sack Brendan Rodgers - judging by the goalkeeper’s latest tweet, anyway.

Reina and Rodgers did not see eye-to-eye at Anfield, leading to the Spaniard’s departure from the Merseyside outfit on loan to Napoli in the summer of 2013, before a permanent transfer to Bayern Munich was completed a year later.

The 33-year-old, less than 24 hours after Rodgers was sacked following the 1-1 draw between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park, admitted he wanted to see the old Liverpool back now Rodgers has been dismissed.

“I will always be a fan & all I want now is to see the old Liverpool come back for the players and the supporters who deserve the best,” Reina tweeted, “YNWA”

Most Liverpool fans reacted to the tweet by calling Reina a “legend” - the goalkeeper remains a firm favourite amongst the Anfield faithful following eight years of loyal service - and you can see a selection of the best responses by scrolling down this page.

Mignolet will need to prove himself to new manager

Rodgers never appeared to fancy Reina as Liverpool’s first-choice keeper and subsequently decided to replace the Spain international after just one season.

Reina was deemed surplus to requirements following the £9 million signing of Simon Mignolet - although the 27-year-old Belgian has endured his fair share of difficult moments since arriving at Anfield from Sunderland just over two years ago.

Like the rest of his teammates, Mignolet will need to prove himself once Liverpool’s next manager is appointed.

Jurgen Klopp currently remains the red-hot favourite to succeed Rodgers, although Carlo Ancelotti and Frank de Boer are also reportedly in the frame for the vacancy at Anfield.
