Chelsea fans not happy with Marco Amelia signing

Chelsea have announced the signing of Italian goalkeeper Marco Amelia on a free transfer, and fans are not happy about it.

Jose Mourinho has had to use summer signing Asmir Begovic in goal following the injury to Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian stopper is not expected back until late December after suffering a serious knee injury last month.

The inexperienced Jamal Blackman became the club's second-choice goalkeeper as a result, but, with just one professional appearance to his name – acquired during a loan spell with Middlesbrough last season – he was not deemed fit to play for the Premier League champions.

Amelia, 33, has been capped nine times for his country and was part of the Italy team that won the 2006 World Cup in Germany. However, he has not been part of the set-up since 2009.

After leaving AC Milan in 2014 on a free transfer, Amelia made the surprise move to amateur side Rocca Priora before returning to professional football with Serie B side Perugia earlier this year.

Needless to say, he does not have the reputation of your usual Chelsea signing, and fans have noted as much with their reaction to the news.

Jose Mourinho convinced

Jose Mourinho invited Amelia to train with the Blues last week and confirmed he hoped to bring him to the club after being impressed with his performance.

The Special One told reporters last week: “He knows the responsibility of playing in the Champions League, his national team.

“The last couple of years he didn’t play so much and hasn’t trained with a team for a few months, but what you need is some cover and stability until Courtois is back.

“Maybe he’s the guy to give us that.”

Amelia's contract runs until the end of the season.
