Football News

The San Francisco 49ers could do with all hands on deck this weekend as they go in search of their first win since week one of the NFL season.

But, sometimes there are more important things than football, and, on this occasion, that will mean the franchise is missing a starter when they line up to take on the New York Giants in week five.

As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, linebacker Ahmad Brooks will miss the game after the death of his sister at the age of 40.

Brooks' sister Casandra, according to Schefter's report, passed away on Wednesday, before the 49ers star could make it to her home in New Orleans.

The 2013 Pro Bowler is now in the Louisiana city with members of his family.

San Francisco head coach Jim Tomsula, although refraining from going into details on Brooks' time away from the franchise, went on record to say that he and the team are keeping the linebacker in their prayers.

It is thought that the 31-year-old will return to the team after the funeral next week, and will be available for selection for the 49ers week six game against the Baltimore Ravens.

A member of the California franchise since 2008, Brooks is a key part of a team that has struggled so far this season. His absence over the weekend will be a big loss, but the veteran has more important things to deal with at this stage.
