Fans have pleaded with Xabi Alonso to come back to Anfield after the Spanish midfielder posted a tweet, welcoming Jurgen Klopp to the “Liverpool family”.

Alonso, 33, remains a firm favourite amongst the Reds supporters following his five-year spell with the Merseyside outfit.

He turns 34 next month but, despite his advancing years, it seems the Liverpool fans would love to see the current Bayern Munich pass-master back in the famous red shirt.

“Welcome to the Liverpool family,” Alonso tweeted, alongside a photo of Klopp touching the famous Anfield sign. “YNWA Mr. Klopp!!”.

Such a tweet was always likely to send the already ecstatic Liverpool fans into further delirium - and it has generated over 10,000 retweets and 9,000 ‘favourites’ within the first hour of being posted.

Klopp should consider bringing Alonso back to Anfield

So, should Klopp consider bringing Alonso back to Liverpool at the end of the season?

The technically-gifted Spaniard might be a little past his best now - at his peak, he was one of the best central midfielders in world football - but he could still do a job at a club like Liverpool.

Not only would he bring an immense amount of experience, but it’s clear that he still feels passionately about Liverpool. He would not be coming back to Anfield for one last big pay day.

Klopp saw for himself last season what Alonso is capable of producing and, if the opportunity arises, the German coach might seriously consider offering him the chance to return - and possibly retire - at Liverpool.
