Steven Gerrard has expressed his excitement on Instagram following the arrival of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Until Friday evening, the Anfield legend had remained quiet on the issue - and he is still yet to offer his thoughts about the club’s decision to sack Brendan Rodgers last weekend.

But Gerrard appears to be behind the decision to hire the charismatic Klopp - like almost every other Liverpool supporter - judging by his latest post on Instagram.

The LA Galaxy midfielder, who brought an end to his 17-year career with the Reds at the end of last season, posted a photo of Klopp holding up a Liverpool scarf, alongside the caption: “Exciting time to be a red .. Best wishes Mr Klopp . YNWA”

Gerard’s post received over 200,000 likes and more than 2,00 comments within the first 12 hours of being published - and those numbers will inevitably rise significantly over the course of the weekend.

Liverpool fans react on Twitter

Gerrard unlikely to return - just yet...

Many fans are hoping that Klopp will bring a former Liverpool star - such as Gerrard, Jamie Carragher or Dietmar Hamann - back to Anfield in some sort of coaching capacity before his first match in charge of the Reds against Tottenham on October 17.

Carragher has already ruled himself out, judging by his Twitter activity on Friday, while it seems very unlikely that Gerrard will agree to return to England so soon after moving to Los Angeles.

Hamann, who helped Liverpool win the Champions League in 2005, is the most likely of the trio to be appointed by the new manager - but with or without a former Red amongst his coaching staff, Klopp will be confident in his own ability to bring the best out of the squad he’s inherited.
