Joe Gomez praises Robert Lewandowski on Twitter

Liverpool full-back Joe Gomez hailed Robert Lewandowski on Sunday night after the Polish striker scored his 15th goal in just six appearances for club and country.

The Bayern Munich star netted what would prove to be the winning goal in the Euro 2016 qualifier between Poland the Republic of Ireland in Warsaw - the 2-1 win sending his national team through to next summer’s finals in France.

Gomez couldn’t resist tweeting about the red-hot striker, who was linked with a shock move to Anfield in Sunday’s newspapers, and this subsequently got a handful of Liverpool supporters very excited.

Gomez tweeted, shortly after the 27-year-old goal machine had put Poland 2-1 ahead against Ireland, “Lewandoski [sic] on flames!”.

Some optimistic members of the Anfield faithful took this as a sign that Lewandowski will soon be on his way to Liverpool - and you can see some of the best replies by scrolling a little further down this page.

Lewandowski unlikely to join Liverpool

So, what are the chances of Lewandowski signing for Liverpool in the summer following the arrival of his former manager at Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp?

Pretty slim, really. The Pole is arguably the best number nine in world football right now and, if he decides to leave Bayern Munich, will be chased by every one of the world’s top clubs.

Lewandowski would not sign for a club playing outside of the Champions League, it’s safe to assume, and he could earn far more money by signing for one of the Manchester clubs, Chelsea, or the big two in Spain: Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The in-form striker, though, has it all at Bayern Munich and is likely to stay with the Bundesliga leaders for the foreseeable future - unfortunately for Liverpool and Klopp.
