The WWE have been desperately trying to sign a Hispanic star over the last couple of weeks and months.

It looked like they had got their man in Carlito. However, the former United States Champion actually rejected the WWE's offer and asked for more money to rejoin the company after several years away.

Del Rio's Return?

But now it looks like the WWE have moved on from Carlito, with reports saying that Alberto Del Rio is the man Vince McMahon and co. want in.

According to a report from PW Insider, via Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc, the WWE are extremely interested in bringing back Del Rio and could be reaching out to the Mexican in the near future for potential contract talks.

Controversial Firing

This comes despite the WWE actually firing Del Rio back in 2014 in extremely distasteful circumstances. The former Heavyweight Champion was let go after he reportedly slapped a WWE employee who had made a racist joke aimed at Del Rio.

Negative Reaction

This didn't sit well with the WWE's Mexican and larger Hispanic fanbase at all, who in turn tuned out of WWE TV in their droves following the company's release of both Del Rio and Rey Mysterio, arguably the biggest Mexican wrestler of all-time.

With the WWE now embarking on their tour of Mexico, they desperately wanted to bring someone in to appease the crowds - no, not you Sin Cara. This is why The Undertaker, Ric Flair and more stars were added to the card, to try and stymie a potential negative backlash from the crowd.

There is a rather large problem with Del Rio coming back to the WWE, however. He’s the current AAA Mega Champion, and Lucha Underground is set to return for its second series, with Del Rio as the main attraction and top star.
