Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell is running down his contract at Old Trafford, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that Powell, 22, is set to quit the Theatre of Dreams after growing disillusioned with football.

The midfielder - formerly of Crewe Alexandra - has seen his progress slow down in Manchester after picking up a serious knee injury, but the report from the Mirror goes on to claim that the youngster hasn't shown the right attitude to succeed.

Powell endured a tricky time on loan at Leicester City last season and was eventually sent back to United early after former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson was reportedly unhappy with the player's appetite for the game.

It appears, then, that his relatively short stint at the Premier League giants could come to an end sooner rather than later.

Wasted talent

It's a huge shame for Powell. There were high hopes of the England U21 man when he arrived at Old Trafford, but he's failed to kick on under three different United managers.

Clearly, if reports are to be believed, he's not committed enough to succeed at the highest level. It looks inevitable that his Red Devils career will end with a whimper and it's far from certain as to whether he will be able to bounce back.

It looks set to a be a huge year or so for Powell, who must work hard in his pursuit of success. It's not going to be easy, of course, but he still has time on his side.
