Justin Abdelkader is named NHL's first star of the week in this season

Detroit Red Wings v Toronto Maple Leafs

The Detroit Red Wings have been having problems with their roster in the recent years as their superstars Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk get older. After losing Pavel Datsyuk to another injury and longtime coach Mike Babcock to the Maple Leafs, the situation for the Detroit Red Wings seemed hopeless before the season began.

However, the Detroit Red Wings have enjoyed nothing but success so far this season. With youngsters like Dylan Larkin, Tomas Tatar, Gustav Nyquist stepping up their game, the Red Wings were able to keep their offensive production and the effectiveness of the power play. The biggest contributor to Detroit's success so far is Justin Abdelkader, a 28-year-old veteran who had the best start to any of his past seasons this year.

Abdelkader has been playing for the Red Wings since 2007 and has been sub-par for the majority of his time in Detroit. He did show some promise last year by scoring 23 goals and amassing 44 points in 71 games, which was a huge jump from his production in the 2013-2014 season where he contributed a meager 10 goals and 28 points in 70 games.

Fortunately for Abdelkader, he has been outstanding so far this season. Abdelkader started off his season with a bang. During the first game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Abdelkader scored a hat trick against his former coach's team. This was Abdelkader's second career hat trick.

Abdelkader played another spectacular game a day after against the Carolina Hurricanes. He contributed greatly to the Red Wing's success as he scored a goal and added an assist. After the first two games of the season, Abdelkader leads the NHL in points (five) and goals (four).

The NHL has named Abdelkader the first star of the week for his incredible performance so far. Perhaps this is only the beginning of a breakout season for Justin Abdelkader.

The Detroit Red Wings will play the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 13. Look for Abdelkader to have another great game.
