Jose Mourinho was spotted in the stands during Spain's 1-0 victory over Ukraine in Kiev on Monday night and Chelsea fans quickly took to Twitter to suggest why.

With Cesc Fabregas, Cesar Azpilicueta and Pedro all representing the current European champions, it was originally believed that the Special One was simply keeping track of his own players.

However, Spanish newspaper Sport – also reported by AS – believes Mourinho had his eyes on someone else; Dynamo Kiev star Andriy Yarmolenko.

The Catalan press have taken particular interest in the matter because Ukraine's flying forward has long been linked with a move to Barcelona. Indeed, the article in Sport suggests interest from the Nou Camp remains high as the La Liga outfit move closer to the end of their transfer embargo.

Yarmolenko, 25, has scored eight goals in just 12 appearances for Dynamo Kiev this season, in what is likely to be another successful season in front of goal. The Ukraine international has scored 40 goals for his club in the last two seasons as well as 20 in 52 caps for his country.

With Chelsea stars Diego Costa, Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao all failing to fire, Mourinho may well be on the lookout for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window. €20million is believed to be enough to land Yarmolenko.

Champions League scouting

There is also the fact that Chelsea will be travelling to Ukraine to take on Yarmolenko's club side in the Champions League next week. Ukraine's squad against Spain contained no fewer than seven Dynamo Kiev players and Mourinho may have been hoping to get an idea of what to expect.

Having suffered defeat to Porto in their second group game, the Blues must come away from Kiev with three points. Anything but a win would significantly dent their chances of qualifying for the latter stage.
