Piers Morgan has rubbed salt into Robin van Persie’s wounds on Twitter after the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker scored an own goal that contributed to the Netherlands failing to qualify for Euro 2016 on Tuesday night.

Van Persie inexplicably steered a header past his own goalkeeper, Jeroen Zoet - putting Czech Republic 3-0 ahead on the night, in the process.

Van Persie did manage to score a late consolation but it wasn’t enough for the Oranje, who embarrassingly failed to qualify for next summer’s European Championships in France.

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan, still angry by the striker’s decision to leave the Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford in 2012, showed no mercy to the current Fenerbahce forward on social media.

“I think that little boy inside is now screaming 'RETIREMENT!!!', @Persie_Official,” he tweeted on Wednesday morning.

Van Persie struggling this season

Morgan was, of course, referring to Van Persie’s words from 2012, when he told reporters that the “little boy” inside of him was screaming for Manchester United.

The Dutch star spent three years with the Red Devils - almost single-handedly winning the Premier League title in his debut campaign at Old Trafford - but has endured a miserable start to the 2015-16 campaign.

His move to Turkey has not gone to plan so far - he’s been a substitute in several matches due to his poor performances - and his misery was compounded last night with this tragicomic own goal.

Manchester United fans react

Manchester United fans, though, defended Van Persie - and here are some of the best replies to Morgan’s tweet.
