Manchester United have been dealt a huge transfer blow after Aymeric Laporte agreed to join Barcelona next summer.

The Red Devils had highlighted the French defender as one of their top targets to fill the gap in their backline. But, according to the Mirror, the Athletic Bilbao man will join the Blaugrana in a deal worth around £35 million.

Louis van Gaal is still looking for a new centre-half having failed to sign Sergio Ramos in the summer and the Dutch boss had sent scouts to run the rule over the Under-21 international. However, his former club appears to have won the race.

Laporte is considered among the best young defenders in world football and has been an ever-present for the Basque side since breaking into their first team in the 2012-13 campaign.

He was a shining light for Los Leones as they finished seventh in La Liga last season as they qualified for the Europa League.

United still appear to be short of real options in the centre of defence as they chase the top quality signing they desire.

Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have formed a strong partnership but at times it is clear to see the Dutchman's shortcomings as a defender.

The return of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo will come as a boost to the Red Devils, but the two players have suffered their fair share of injuries throughout their respective times at Old Trafford.

The lack of top quality and options could come back to haunt Van Gaal as the season progresses, but you would expect the signing of a new defender to be high on the agenda.
