Louis van Gaal's selection for Manchester United's important Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow has caused quite a stir on social media.

The Dutch manager has handed a first start of the season to England youth international Jesse Lingard, with Juan Mata dropping to the bench.

Van Gaal also introduced Antonio Valencia for Matteo Darmian, but it was the inclusion of the academy graduate that caught the eye of United fans.

Lingard made his first appearance of the season in the 3-0 win over Everton and his inclusion in Russia is a huge vote of confidence from his manager.

An argument could be made that one eye is firmly on Sunday's Manchester derby, however, with only two changes being made from the win at Goodison it is a strong United line-up.

Lingard had said Van Gaal told him to remain at Old Trafford this season, insisting he will get appearances, and the Dutchman has kept his word.

A lot is expected of the 22-year-old, who started United's first game of last season before a knee injury ruled him out until January.

Had it not been for the injury, he may have broken into the first-team last season, but tonight is a perfect opportunity for the former Derby loanee to prove his worth. But it's fair to say, the majority of United are delighted with the decision.

Having spent so much money since taking the helm at Old Trafford, it is refreshing to see Van Gaal affording opportunities to youth.

Andreas Pereira, James Wilson and Patrick McNair are knocking on the door at Old Trafford and the sight of Lingard in the XI will fill them with confidence that their time will come.
