Chelsea’s miserable start to the season showed no signs of improving with their 2-1 loss to West Ham today, and it was another afternoon to forget for Jose Mourinho.

After falling behind to Mauro Zarate’s opener, the Blues were then reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of Nemanja Matic in the first half.

And there were even fewer Chelsea personnel who returned to the field for the second half after Mourinho was also sent off and ordered to the stands.

From there he watched Gary Cahill equalise for the visitors and provide some hope of salvaging something from their trip to Upton Park.

Unfortunately for the reigning Premier League champions, they were defeated by Andy Carroll’s 79th minute winner.

And amongst the jubilation of the West Ham fans is arguably one of the most poignant images of the season so far – with Mourinho looking aghast against a crowd of joyous Hammers.

Both London clubs are having contrasting seasons, with West Ham provisionally moving up to second in the league – just a point behind leaders Manchester City – and Chelsea still languishing in the bottom six.

Mourinho’s side have only won once on the road in the league so far this season. Up next is a tough trip to Stoke on Tuesday night, before hosting Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool next weekend.
