Daley Blind had incredible own goal disallowed against Middlesbrough

Daley Blind may not have been the worst performer for Manchester United during Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup defeat to Middlesbrough at Old Trafford, but it was the Dutch defender who produced the most bizarre moment of the evening.

The 25-year-old, making his first start for the Red Devils since the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal earlier this month, inexplicably scored one of the great non-own goals of all time against United’s Championship opponents.

A strike from a Middlesbrough player beat Sergio Romero and came back off the inside of the post straight to Blind who, rather than clearing the ball, decided to slam it into the back of his own net. (Scroll down this page to watch Daley Blind’s moment of madness).

This clearly wasn’t deliberate by Blind - his reaction, hands on head, showed he knew he’d messed up - but, fortunately, he was let off by the assistant referee, who had raised his flag for offside.

It was a huge moment of relief for Blind. Had it stood, the own goal would have been up there with the very best.

Get Blind back on the bench

It’s safe to assume Blind will be back on the substitutes’ bench for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.

While the Netherlands international is a useful squad player, capable of doing a job in multiple positions, Manchester United have better options in their ranks at centre-back.
