Manchester United fans criticise Wayne Rooney after Middlesbrough defeat

Manchester United fans showed no mercy to their under-performing captain Wayne Rooney on Wednesday night after he flattered to deceive once more against Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup.

The 30-year-old, who is enduring arguably the worst period of his career so far, came on at half-time for James Wilson but failed to inspire his teammates as United crashed out of the competition following a penalty shoot-out.

Rooney stepped up to take the Red Devils’ first spot-kick but failed to beat Boro goalkeeper Tomas Mejias from 12 yards - a moment which summed up his miserable night and, indeed, his season so far.

An increasing number of Manchester United fans believe Rooney deserves to be dropped, but Louis van Gaal appears to be reluctant to bench his captain.

Following last weekend’s 0-0 draw against local rivals Manchester City, an agitated Van Gaal told reporters he was “sick” of being asked questions about Rooney, who has scored six goals in 14 appearances for the Red Devils so far this term.

Martial should play as United's centre-forward

But Van Gaal cannot ignore the fact that Rooney isn’t producing the goods for Manchester United right now.

Fans are angered that Anthony Martial, United’s best attacking player this season, has been shunted out wide in order to accommodate Rooney in a central position.

Martial has still managed to impress in the wide-left position, but the France international looks so much more dangerous when deployed through the middle. On current form, the teenager would surely be capable of doing more damage to opponents than Rooney.

Man Utd fans vent their anger on Twitter

United fans made their feelings about Rooney crystal clear on Twitter last night - check out some of these tweets.
