The Argentina international, who joined United for £59.7 million before leaving Old Trafford for Paris Saint-Germain less than 12 months later, has told Spanish newspaper Marca that it was always his intention to stay at the Bernabeu.
However, due to “stuff that agents deal with” - and, presumably, the arrival of James Rodriguez from AS Monaco - Di Maria ended up leaving arguably the world’s biggest football club for Manchester United.

“It was always my intention to stay, never to go, I don't know much about what went on there behind closed doors, that's stuff the agents deal with,” Di Maria revealed.
“I left Madrid the way I left but what I took with me was the fantastic moment of that final applause at the Bernabéu, and I feel okay with that.”
Di Maria flopped at Man Utd
Following an impressive start to life at Manchester United - fans will always remember his stunning lob against Leicester City - Di Maria flopped at Old Trafford.
An attempted burglary at his Prestbury mansion in early 2015 appeared to be the turning point for the South American and his young family; Di Maria was never the same player after that incident and, from then onwards, it always seemed likely that he would leave the Premier League.
Di Maria still looking to rediscover his best form
The Argentine, 27, has produced some eye-catching moments for PSG but is still looking to rediscover the world-class form that he showed during his final season with Real Madrid.
United fans aren’t too concerned that he’s gone - his performances in the second half of the 2014-15 campaign were dreadful - but they’re frustrated with the lack of heart he showed towards the end of his spell at Old Trafford.
And for that reason they’re struggling to forgive him.
