Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard's hopes of winning a first league title of his career were dashed as LA Galaxy were beaten 3-2 by the Seattle Sounders.

His move to the most successful team in MLS history was seen as the perfect chance for the former Reds captain to finally add a league winner's medal to his collection.

However, the Anfield legend and his teammates will have to regroup and prepare for next season as they were dumped out of in the MLS Cup playoff.

Having finished fifth in the Western Conference, the Galaxy were tasked with a one-off game against the Sounders to secure their place in the Conference semi-finals.

Erik Friberg's 73rd minute strike condemned Bruce Arena's side to defeat and ended their chances of lifting a seventh MLS Cup.

And football fans were quick to take to Twitter to troll the former England international after his hopes of winning a title, once again, slipped away.

The former Liverpool midfielder has scored two goals in 12 games since moving across the Atlantic Ocean and will be hoping his side can make an improved push next season.

There will be no return to Anfield for Gerrard during the MLS offseason. Given the growth of the league, there is no longer the need - or want - for their big-name players to embark on loan spells across Europe.

Surely Jurgen Klopp would love to have the Merseyside boy at his disposal, but the German manager will have to make do with his current crop of players.

The 48-year-old picked up his first win on Wednesday night - a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth - and will be hoping to heap more misery on an under pressure Jose Mourinho this weekend.
