This past Sunday at the Hell in a Cell event John Cena kicked off the main show with another open challenge, and fans couldn’t believe what they saw when the challenger was revealed.
At first it looked as if Jack Swagger was going to be the challenger as Zeb Colter was on the stage with his mobility scooter, only to introduce the returning Alberto Del Rio who went on to dethrone Cena.
It’s no secret why this happened, though, for weeks now fans have been aware of the fact that Cena is scheduled to take time off and would return on December 26 which is the house show at Madison Square Garden.

However, F4WOnline have speculated that Cena could make a return earlier than expected if it’s to be believed then he will make his return on December 13 instead. That will be the Tables, Ladders and Chairs event which just happens to be in Cena’s home state of Massachusetts.
It’s obvious why the WWE would want him to come back at that event as the reaction would blow the roof off the arena, especially since the plan is to have him return and invoke his rematch clause against Alberto Del Rio for the United States Championship.
Cena’s advertised return at Madison Square Garden sees him defend the United States Championship against Mr. Money in the Bank, Sheamus. This means there’s a chance Cena will return to recapture his championship before defending it.
It doesn’t seem like much of a difference in return dates, however with the current ratings situation Cena will definitely add a lot of value if he is advertised to return earlier than expected and TLC will also be more of a must-see event.
CAN THEY SURVIVE WITHOUT CENA?
Now it will be an interesting time for the WWE in the coming months to see how they can handle not having Cena on any of their shows, Seth Rollins has been criticised heavily in the past few weeks, but now he’ll need to step up and take control of making Monday Night Raw entertaining.
The WWE will be okay without Cena for Survivor Series, especially since The Undertaker will be competing and all of the focus will be on him for his 25-year celebration, and he’s also set to take part in the tour of the UK.
It’s not clear what the current plan for Del Rio is right now as his current alliance with Colter raised a few eyebrows as to which paths the WWE could go down.
Right now the obvious choice looks to be a European superstar that is a face, and the perfect fit seems to be Cesaro if he’s given the opportunity to compete for the United States Championship. If that does take place then it’s clear Del Rio will keep hold of the championship until Cena does make his triumphant return and dethrones Del Rio.
