Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed his belief that the door will never be shut regarding a potential return to the Santiago Bernabeu for Jose Mourinho.
Former Los Blancos president Ramon Calderon sparked a deluge of speculation earlier this week when he said that Mourinho was still held in very high regard at the Spanish club despite leaving under a cloud in 2013.
The Special One left Real to move back to west London giants Chelsea, but Arbeloa - for what it’s worth - is of the opinion that he could be welcomed with open arms to the club he won the La Liga title with back in 2012.
"I've been asked before and I always say 'Yes, why not?'" he said, according to The Guardian.
"He was a very important coach here.
"It is clear that because of the way he is, because he is very direct and he tells people straight, without hypocrisy, he upsets a lot of people.
"There are a lot of people waiting [for him to fail] but there are a lot more waiting to see him turn things around and move forward again. He's a very good coach so I don't think the door at Real Madrid is shut to him, no."
What makes the Spaniard’s comments all the more interesting is that Mourinho might well soon be on the lookout for a new job.
Last season it looked as though his emotional return to Chelsea had been vindicated - the Blues won the Premier League and the League Cup - but the current campaign couldn’t have really started any worse.
The Blues are currently in 15th place in the Premier League table and have already lost five matches.
To compound matters they were knocked out of the League Cup by Stoke City midweek, placing Mourinho under considerable pressure.
Real return possible?
If he is relieved of his duties then Real could be an option moving forward.
Rafael Benitez has done little to inspire confidence since taking the reigns at the Bernabeu though he’ll obviously be given time to prove himself before any rash decisions are made.
