James Anderson remains confident England can go for victory in the third Test against Pakistan in Sharjah despite losing two early wickets as they chase a target of 284.

England finished on 46 for two after Moeen Ali went for 22 and Ian Bell was out for a duck, with Shoaib Malik taking both wickets.

That has already complicated England's attempts to complete what would be a record run chase in Asia, 75 higher than their best yet in Bangladesh six years ago.

However, Anderson sounded undaunted by the challenge ahead.

"We've got a chance, definitely," he said on Sky Sports 2.

"We'll have to bat very well and it will be difficult on a fifth-day wicket against their spinners but we'll give it a good shot. We don't want to leave the UAE with nothing. We've played pretty well throughout this series, and it would be nice to get something out it."

England were guilty of missed chances as Pakistan made 355 in their second innings, with Mohammad Hafeez scoring 151 after his reprieve on two on Tuesday.

But Anderson praised their positive approach and urged England to play the same way.

"We've seen the way Pakistan batted in their second innings and they were positive," he said.

"If we do that there's a good chance. We need a couple of people to bat very well, to build a couple of partnerships, but there's no reason why we can't.

"It's not ideal missing opportunities but it happens. We stuck to our task really well throughout their second innings. If you'd given us around 250 to chase at the start of the match we'd have taken it. Obviously it's a bit more than that and we need a couple of people to bat really well but we've still got a good chance."

However, Hafeez claimed the pitch was on Pakistan's side.

"This pitch looks easy but it's not," he said.

"We're very confident after closing 200-plus up because we have got enough of a spin attack to get at them. We're very happy with the total on the board and we're very confident.

"To have 284 is nearly 350 on this pitch so clearly we back ourselves and one more wicket will change things."
