Following Manchester United's comfortable 2-0 win over West Brom last weekend, manager Louis van Gaal hinted at the possibility of signing a new winger in the January transfer window.

The Dutchman believes his current crop of wide men are "hindering" his squad, and that more speed is needed on the Red Devils' flanks if they're to muster a genuine bid for the Premier League title.

They currently trail leaders Manchester City and Arsenal by just two points, cutting the previous deficit of four in half after both sides failed to secure wins against Aston Villa and Tottenham respectively.

And yet, the 64-year-old seemed unsatisfied with the result.

According to Manchester Evening News, he said: “I have said already in my first year many times we need speed and creativity on the wings.

“You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard and he is not the most speedy winger in the world and Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world."

The summer saw LVG focus largely on bringing the very best to Old Trafford, targeting stars such as Sergio Ramos, Thomas Muller, Pedro and Robert Lewandowski.

However, it seems Van Gaal's desire to bring in attacking reinforcements has since increased, with Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Neymar all candidates for United to pursue in the hope of adding much-needed class out wide.

“It is also dependable on what I can buy. I want to buy a lot of players, but not all the players I want are for sale," Van Gaal continued.

Neymar is unlikely to leave Barcelona, though, especially given the leading role he's undertaken since Lionel Messi's long-term injury, with Hazard and Bale the more likely options, given their respective issues with Chelsea and Real Madrid.
