The Sunday People's chief football writer Steve Bates may find it difficult to get any decent quotes from Gary Neville in the future.

The Mirror recently posted an article about the former Manchester United defender's views on the Red Devils' chase of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

England's coach said he believed the Old Trafford giants should look to the future and pursue Bale over an emotional return for his Portuguese teammate.

His controversial views on Ronaldo could spark debate among United fans, but Neville appears less than happy his comments made off the record were ever published.

The 40-year-old commented on the futures of Los Blancos' Galacticos during a private charity event and took to Twitter, describing Bates' decision to make the comments public as poor.

His disappointment was supported by many of his followers who slammed the actions of the writer.

However, Neville's quotes do make for interesting reading.

While many Manchester United fans would love to see Ronaldo return to his old stomping ground, the former England international's views make a lot of sense.

A lot has changed since the three-time Ballon d'Or winner departed Old Trafford in 2009 and neither player nor club are the same.

A move for Bale would see Manchester United tie down the world-class signing they crave and also ensure the long-term future of their attacking line-up.

Of course, the question still remains over whether Real Madrid would sell either of their Galacticos, but Red Devils fans can continue to dream.
