Mario Balotelli’s hopes of securing a permanent move to AC Milan from Liverpool at the end of the season have suffered a blow after the striker was told he has a hernia that will require surgery.

This is according to the Liverpool Echo, who cite Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport as claiming the 25-year-old could spend the next three months on the sidelines.

Balotelli, who has made just three competitive appearances for Milan due to a persistent groin injury, was told that he faces a lengthy spell out of action by Danish specialist Professor Per Holmich.

The Italy international had hoped to reignite his career back at the San Siro following a difficult debut season at Anfield.

Deemed surplus to requirements by Brendan Rodgers in the summer, Balotelli was somewhat fortunate to secure a temporary move back to Milan after managing to score a disappointing four goals in 28 appearances for the Reds.

Another frustrating spell for Mario

The loan spell started well for Balotelli, who rifled in a superb free-kick against Udinese back in September, but that has been the highlight of an otherwise frustrating few months back with the Rossoneri.

The striker could now be out until mid-February and that will only leave him with a few months to convince Milan boss Sinisa Mihajlovic that he’s worth keeping beyond next summer.

Expect Balotelli back at Liverpool next summer...

In all probability, with Carlos Bacca scoring goals fairly regularly, Balotelli will be sent back to Liverpool at the end of the season.

Some members of the Anfield faithful believe Jurgen Klopp could bring the best out of the enigmatic forward, but that’s optimistic to say the least.
