Barcelona have released footage showing Lionel Messi back in training just days before the club’s first Clasico of the season against fierce rivals Real Madrid.

Messi, who has been out of action since September with a knee injury, could now feature against Rafael Benitez’s side on Sunday afternoon.

Spanish newspaper AS have suggested that Messi could start the match from the bench - but manager Luis Enrique will not risk the Argentina international if he’s not ready.

Messi, though, looked sharp in the training session Barcelona uploaded to YouTube.

Participating in one of the club’s famous ‘Rondo’ exercises in training, Messi appeared to be moving freely and showed no signs of the knee injury which has kept him sidelined in recent weeks.

Neymar and Suarez are on fire

Barcelona have performed well without Messi, securing seven victories from their nine matches since the 2-1 win over Las Palmas in September.

Neymar and Luis Suarez, in particular, have been outstanding in recent weeks and will be amongst the first names on the Barcelona team-sheet at the Bernabeu this weekend.

Barcelona need Messi over coming months

While Enrique will naturally be tempted to use Messi, the favourite to win a record-breaking fifth Ballon d’Or award in January, it’s important for the Barça boss to remember this is just another match

Barcelona have some important fixtures on the horizon - including games at the FIFA World Club Cup next month - and Enrique will need Messi for the next few months and beyond.

Even without Messi on the pitch, Barcelona stand an excellent chance of defeating Real Madrid this weekend.
