Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has returned to full training on Merseyside, but Reds chief Jurgen Klopp wants the forward to prove his fitness before handing him a place in his side.

This has been reported by the Liverpool Echo, who claim that the revered coach plans to monitor the technically gifted forward throughout the course of this week ahead of the club's Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Sturridge still hasn't featured under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield after suffering a knee injury in training at the start of October.

The forward has endured a torrid time recently, having failed to maintain his fitness for well over a year. In fact, the striker has only managed 15 appearances in the Premier League since the beginning of last season.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Klopp could yet hand Sturridge a spot in his squad for the showdown against City, but only if he can prove his worth across a number of training sessions first.

But Klopp will be well aware that he can't rush the talented striker back. When fit and firing, Sturridge is a unique talent, but the Liverpool faithful haven't seen the England international at his best for some time now.

Sturridge's remarkable 2013/14 season, where he scored 21 goals in 29 league appearances, will live long in the memory of the Kop, but there's huge doubt on Merseyside that he will ever be the same again.

The ability is there, of course, but he's now in need of a great deal of luck in an attempt to get his career back on track.
