Kolo Toure falls over the ball in training ahead of Liverpool v Manchester City

With Mamadou Sakho injured, Kolo Toure probably fancied his chances of starting for Liverpool against his former club Manchester City on Saturday evening.

But it’s safe to assume that Jurgen Klopp will select Dejan Lovren over the veteran centre-back after watching him closely in training on Thursday.

At one point, Toure tried to control a misplaced pass from Divock Origi and ended up on his backside. His Liverpool teammates found it amusing - and fans will, too - although at the same time they were probably a little more concerned about the prospect of the retired Ivory Coast international up against the likes of Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne this weekend. Toure has not played a single minute of Premier League football for Liverpool this season but is likely to be on the subs’ bench at the Etihad Stadium with Sakho sidelined after suffering a knee injury earlier this month.

Lovren has told Klopp that he’s ready to step in for the France international, who has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season, and the Croatian defender is expected to line-up alongside Martin Skrtel at the heart of the Reds’ defence.

Some Liverpool fans want Kolo to go

A poll conducted by the Mirror earlier this week found that less than 40 per cent of Liverpool fans want Toure to stay at Anfield beyond January.

Even though he is a lovely guy...

But it’s patently clear that the 34-year-old’s best days are now well behind him - and it probably won’t be too much longer before the majority of Liverpool supporters get their wish for the defender to be moved on.
