It’s been a rough few months for Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj at Borussia Dortmund, but tonight the Belgian starlet gave Thomas Tuchel something to think about with an assist in the closing stages of the 3-1 defeat to Hamburg.

Dortmund were already 3-0 down when Tuchel sent on Januzaj for Marco Reus with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Fifteen minutes later the on-loan United ace made a key contribution: sliding a short pass through to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a late consolation goal. (Scroll down this page to watch Januzaj’s assist).

Tonight was only Januzaj’s sixth Bundesliga appearance since arriving at Signal Iduna Park at the end of the summer transfer window.

Despite being handed the number nine shirt on his arrival, Januzaj has failed to truly convince Tuchel, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

It could be an important moment for Januzaj

But the fact he has struggled for game-time at Borussia Dortmund suggests he would have encountered similar trouble had he stayed at Old Trafford.

There’s no doubt Januzaj possesses huge amounts of individual ability but his overall contribution - particularly the defensive side of his game - has to improve if he is to fulfil his potential and become a genuine star.

Perhaps he will have another run of matches after tonight’s assist and prove, once and for all, that he is good enough to hold down a place at a top European club.
