Chelsea ready to rival Manchester United for Sadio Mane

Chelsea are preparing to join the race to sign Southampton forward Sadio Mane in the January transfer window.

That is according to the Mirror, who believe the Stamford Bridge outfit are looking at the Manchester United target as a solution to their goalscoring woes.

The Senegalese international, who moved to the Saints from Red Bull Salzburg for £11.8 million in 2014, was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer and it seems the Red Devils now face competition from the Blues.

Mane, who has scored three goals in 13 league appearances this season, is still on United's radar and the south coast club have maintained that Louis van Gaal failed to follow up on his interest in the summer.

Southampton are keen on tying the 23-year-old down to a new deal and he still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at St. Mary's.

Jose Mourinho's men have scored just 17 league goals this season and find themselves in 15th place while United sit second despite scoring just two more than the west London club.

That is largely down to the defences, with a Chris Smalling inspired Manchester United conceding just nine compared to Chelsea's eye-watering 23.

But despite those statistics it seems Mourinho wants to add more firepower as Diego Costa is currently their top Premier League goalscorer with a paltry three.

Mane hasn't exactly been firing on all cylinders this season, but he has still done enough to attract the attention of the big hitters.

With Chelsea and United both reportedly keen, it could be a tough fight for Ronald Koeman to hold on to one of his star players.
