Nick Powell makes Manchester United Under-21 comeback

Football News

It was reported last month that Nick Powell was disillusioned with football and had decided to quit Manchester United.

But a few weeks later, United’s Under-21 coach Warren Joyce told the club’s official website that Powell was working “extremely hard” and revealed the talented midfielder was “in the best condition he has ever been in his life”.

On Monday night, the 21-year-old made his first appearance for Manchester United’s U21 team for nine months - and you can see how he performed by scrolling down this page to the embedded YouTube video.

Powell, wearing the number 10 shirt, showed some neat touches during the 55 minutes he was on the pitch.

However, the former England Under-21 international was also involved in several altercations with members of the Norwich City team. Perhaps he was a little too enthusiastic at times.

'Solid if not spectacular'

Considering he’d been out of action for so long and seriously considered quitting the Red Devils, though, it was a relatively decent display.

The Mirror described his performance as “solid if not spectacular” and rated him six out of 10.

United fans react on Twitter

Here’s what Man Utd fans on Twitter thought of Powell’s display…

His United career could still be over

However, it still feels that Powell has a long way to go before he’s competing with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick for a place in Louis van Gaal’s midfield.

Manchester Evening News writer Rob Dawson can’t see it ever happening - and it’s hard to disagree with that opinion.
