Anthony Martial & Wayne Rooney return to Manchester United training

Manchester United welcomed Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial back to full first-team training this morning as the duo step up their recovery from an illness and injury respectively.

Both were absent from Saturday's 2-1 win over Watford and the lack of creativity was evident. Indeed, they relied on a last minute own goal from Troy Deeney to seal all three points.

Rooney was feeling under the weather and Martial sustained a foot injury whilst on international duty for France, but both were able to take part in training with their Red Devils team-mates.

Needless to say, the news has been greeted with much glee from Manchester United fans, but it is not all good news for Louis van Gaal and his red army. As many as six first-team stars were still missing from the session.

Michael Carrick (ankle), Phil Jones (ankle), Ander Herrera (hamstring), Bastian Schweinsteiger (unknown), Antonio Valencia (foot) and Luke Shaw (leg) will all likely miss Wednesday's game against PSV Eindhoven.

Important tie

Manchester United will be looking to assert revenge on the Eredivisie champions after their 2-1 reverse in the away tie. It was a disappointing night for United, which was compounded by the serious injury sustained by Shaw.

United sit precariously at the top of Group B with seven points, leading both PSV and Wolfsburg by just one point. A loss, coupled with a Wolfsburg victory against CSKA Moscow, will leave them in third place with just one matchday remaining.

Conversely, a win would see them seal their passage to the latter stages and could even seal them top spot. It promises to be a nervy night against tricky opposition.
