Memphis Depay should start up front for Manchester United against PSV

Following his performance against Watford last weekend, Memphis Depay has done enough to warrant a place in the starting line-up against PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Manchester United fans could breathe a sigh of relief at his return to form – and his first goal since the end of September – as United claimed three points through Troy Deeney’s late own goal.

Perhaps more important than the three points was the discovery of Depay impressing as a striker. In a squad only boasting Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and James Wilson as out-and-out strikers, Louis van Gaal has broadened his options in this position.

Of course, LVG already knew his compatriot’s versatility in this position after operating him there for the Dutch national team, but now Red Devils supporters have seen first hand what he is capable of as a front man.

His movement and willingness to get beyond the last defender opened up the opportunity for his goal at Vicarage Road, and he backed up his hard work with a sublime controlled finish into the top

Considering it was his first start in more than a month, the 21-year-old showed he was switched on by giving his side an early lead.

Rooney and Martial are both returning to full fitness and have a chance of starting at Old Trafford, but it wouldn’t make sense to drop Depay off the back of such a promising performance.

Playing against his former club may also be advantageous for the hosts as the winger knows Phillip Cocu’s team inside out, having trained with them for the last few seasons.

Scoring a few more goals could be the catalyst for the £25m man igniting his Manchester United career and making a real impact in the Premier League, and playing as a striker he’ll be more
likely to benefit from that confidence boost.
