Manchester United fans blast Louis van Gaal on Twitter after PSV draw

After yet another uninspiring performance against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League tonight, some Manchester United supporters have had enough of Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils played out a tepid 0-0 draw in front of their home fans and must now beat Wolfsburg - away in Germany on December 8 - to secure their place in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Van Gaal took the brunt of the fans’ anger on Twitter - and you can see just how furious and disillusioned the United supporters are by scrolling down this page.

It’s a genuine surprise that #VanGaalOut wasn’t trending on Twitter after the final whistle because there were hundreds of tweets containing that exact hashtag.

United fans, perhaps a little spoilt by the attacking football produced under Sir Alex Ferguson, expect to be entertained but are regularly left disappointed because of Van Gaal’s cautious tactics.

Tweets: United fans blast Van Gaal

Fans are not being entertained

Van Gaal would argue that his approach is working: Manchester United can still qualify for the Champions League knockout stages and currently sit one point off top spot in the Premier League table.

But football is an entertainment business - fans part with their hard-earned money either to watch in the stadium or at home on television - and you could count the number of genuinely exciting performances produced by the Red Devils under Van Gaal since he arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014 on the fingers of one hand.

No obvious replacement is available

The only question is: if Van Gaal was sacked, who could replace him at short notice?

Jurgen Klopp would have been a great appointment but he is with Liverpool now, Pep Guardiola isn’t leaving Bayern Munich until next summer at the earliest, while Jose Mourinho is unlikely to join United from Chelsea.

Fans hoping for Van Gaal’s departure, therefore, are likely to be left disappointed.
