Paul Scholes is not convinced by Anthony Martial and believes Manchester United may need to sign a new goalscorer in January.
Speaking live on BT Sport after United’s disappointing 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night, Scholes said he doesn’t believe that Martial lives to score goals like all proper strikers should.
The former Manchester United midfielder wants to see more emotion from Martial - both when he scores and misses chances - and believes Louis van Gaal should consider signing a more traditional centre-forward when the transfer window re-opens in the New Year.

“Martial, for me, he’s still got a lot to prove goalscoring wise,” Scholes commented. “He isn’t a centre-forward like [his BT Sport colleagues Michael Owen and Gary Lineker] where he lives for goals. He’s a player who likes to come outside the box, he likes to drift to the left wing.
“He doesn’t really look bothered if he misses a chance, he doesn’t look bothered if he scores a goal. Whereas, as a centre-forward all you live for is scoring goals. All you want to do is score goals but he doesn’t look that type of player to me and maybe they need to go into the transfer market in January for one of them.”
Martial is on course to become a superstar
Van Gaal admitted last month that he was unsure where Martial’s best position on the pitch was. For both Manchester United and France, the 19-year-old has played out on the left wing on occasions and performed well.
However, the hugely talented forward has also demonstrated that he is effective when deployed upfront.
It’s no secret that Martial possesses an ice-cool persona - both on and off the pitch - and he has earned praise from fans and pundits alike in recent months for not going overboard when he scores.
Martial has netted five goals in 14 appearances for the Red Devils and looks destined to become one of the world’s best forwards.
Scholes might end up regretting his latest comments, although Manchester United could probably do with another goalscorer to ease the burden on both Martial and Wayne Rooney, who is enduring his worst season as a professional footballer so far.
